Why Markdown rather than Word
A DOCX keeps an approximation of the visual layout, which is what you want if a human will edit and re-send the document.
Markdown throws the layout away and keeps the words. That is what you want when the destination is a knowledge base, a documentation site, a note-taking app or a model context window, where formatting noise is pure cost.
It is also diffable. Tracking changes between two versions of a document is trivial in git once it is Markdown, and impossible as a PDF.
What you get and what you lose
Multi-column layouts are the common failure: the extractor reads the text in the order the PDF stores it, which can interleave columns. Academic papers and newsletters usually need a tidy-up pass afterwards.
Scanned PDFs have no text to extract at all. Run OCR PDF first, then convert.

Frequently asked questions
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. The file is opened and rewritten by your browser, so it never leaves your device. That matters for contracts, invoices and anything with personal data in it.
Why is my Markdown file empty?
The PDF is a scan with no text layer. Use the OCR PDF tool to recognize the characters first, then convert.
Are headings detected automatically?
Only page breaks become headings. Visual heading styles are not reliably distinguishable from body text in a PDF, so real headings need adding by hand.
