Before you convert
This works on PDFs that contain real text. If the PDF is a scan - a photograph of a page - there is no text to extract, and you need the OCR PDF tool first to recognize the characters.
A quick way to tell: try selecting a line of text in your PDF reader. If the selection highlights individual words, the text is there. If it selects a whole rectangle like an image, it is a scan.
What carries over and what does not
The output is optimized for editable text rather than a pixel-perfect copy. Treat it as a starting draft you will tidy up, not a faithful reproduction of the original design.
| Element | Result |
|---|---|
| Body text | Preserved, in reading order |
| Page order | Preserved |
| Columns and text boxes | Flattened into a single flow |
| Tables | Often lose their cell structure |
| Images and vector graphics | Not carried over |
Frequently asked questions
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. These tools process files in your browser. Nothing is sent to an external API, so your document never leaves your device.
Will the layout look identical?
Not in every case. The result is optimized for editable text; columns, special fonts, tables and images usually need manual tidying.
Why is my converted file empty?
The PDF is almost certainly a scanned image with no text layer. Run it through the OCR PDF tool first, then convert.
