How to create a WhatsApp link
- Choose the country and enter the phone number without the country code.
- Optionally write the message you want pre-filled for the person clicking.
- Copy the generated link, or press Open in WhatsApp to test it yourself.
- Add the link to your website, bio, email signature or QR code.
How the link is built
The format is https://wa.me/<number>?text=<message>. The number must be in full international form with no plus sign, spaces, dashes or brackets - a US number is written as 15551234567.
The message is URL-encoded, so emoji, punctuation and line breaks all survive the trip. The recipient can still edit the text before sending, so treat it as a starting point rather than a commitment.
A short pre-filled message such as "Hi, I'd like to know more about …" measurably increases how many people finish sending. It removes the blank-screen hesitation.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need WhatsApp Business for this?
No. Click-to-chat links work with any WhatsApp account. WhatsApp Business adds catalogs, away messages and labels, but the link itself is identical.
Does the person need to save my number?
No - that is the main advantage. The link opens the conversation directly.
Why isn't my link working?
It is almost always the number format. Include the country code, remove the plus sign and strip every space, dash and bracket. Some countries also drop a leading zero in international format.
Can I put this link in a QR code?
Yes, and it is a common use for printed signage and packaging. Paste the generated link into the QR code generator.
