Where commission fits into your pricing
Commission = Sale value × (Rate ÷ 100). It is a variable cost, which means it should be included in your margin calculation before you decide a price.
A 10% commission on a product with a 30% margin removes a third of your gross profit. If you sell through affiliates or agents, build the rate into the price from the start rather than treating it as an afterthought.
Check whether your agreement calculates commission on the gross sale value or on net revenue after refunds, discounts and shipping - the difference is substantial over a year.
Frequently asked questions
Is commission calculated before or after tax?
That depends on the agreement, but it is normally calculated on the net sale value excluding tax. Enter whichever figure your contract specifies.
How do I handle tiered commission rates?
Calculate each tier separately using the value that falls within that band, then add the results together.
